Overrated Albums

There are some albums that seem to get all the praise in the world and are always lauded as great and always listed in top album lists. Some examples:

Jeff Buckley "Grace". I bought this CD and do admit to listening to it from time to time but it's "greatness" hasn't hit me yet. He writes good songs but I just don't get why it's such a heralded album.

Beach Boys "Pet Sounds". While I like the Beach Boys and Brian Wilson in particular, I've read the reviews and agree it's a good album but why is it such a "great" album. It's been said that Brian Wilson's song structures are written like classical music pieces and the songs are lush and beautiful. But to me, for the most part, it's just another 60's rock album.

To my ear, the best albums are ones you "have" to listen to all the way through. A prime example is Pink Floyd's Dark Side Of The Moon. That album was magical from top to bottom and still stands up as a great album 30+ years later.

There are alot of albums that are always listed as great albums and everyone agrees but some of those albums are just good at best.

Which ones do you think are always listed in top album lists but, for whatever reason, you're just not feeling it.

Class? Class? Anyone? Anyone?

you have to remember the context that these albums were released in.

pet sounds was released in '66, and an album like that was unheard of in popular music.

While I do consider Zeppelin I and II classics, their appeal sort of tapers off beyond that.

For me, anyways.

Jeff Buckley is probobly one of my most favorite artists, and not a lot of people know of him and/or grace so I fail to see how it's overrated but I can see where you're coming from. You just have to be..with him or something, I don't know how to describe it. If you listen to his recorded session at Sin-E it's quite amazing. Ok Computer isnt overrated, but that will vary depending on the extreme end of the radiohead spectrum you fall under. Either you hate them/think they're annoying, or you love them.

Wow, just another 60's rock album? Outside of The Beatles, and perhaps The Who's Tommy, I don't see too many 60's albums coming close to this masterpiece.

I listened to Pet Sounds the other day for yet another time to try and see what the big deal is about the Beach Boys and after all these decades I still don't get it yet it's always held up as one of the greats.

i wouldn't say the wall is 'lousy' but i don't think it's as great as so many potheads i've known consider it; like some sort of pinnacle of art-rock. or in their words 'the most awesome mind-blowing record you will EVER hear man'
