Pet Sounds is hard to get into.

the first time i listened to the album i was let down. i went in expecting pop rock, chock full of danceable rockers and patented beach boys melodies about California and surfing. huge let down, if that's what you're expecting. i didn't do my homework.

the second time, i went in with a more Pepperesque (if you will) attitude. it was great, although not on the same level as Sgt. Peppers. lush orchestration, and amazing production considering the year was 1966.

Pet Sounds is an amazing feat... there would be no Sgt. Peppers without Pet Sounds. Pet Sounds played a massive role, perhaps even the largest, in how rock and pop developed.

Either the Good Rev hasn't seen this thread to comment on Pet Sounds or he is doing his best, from going postal. It could get ugly, if it’s the first.

Well, I probably agree with you if only for the fact that I can't help but be reminded of Daevid Allen era Gong whenever I hear that album.

That said, I do still like the Wall.

I like The Wall and last I looked, I wasn't a pothead. However, I do like my Single Malt.

I will say, that I don't consider it the pinnacle of art-rock. Although, their live performance of, The Wall.....

Marvin Gaye - What's Going On

I guess I just don't see the big deal. There are a few really good songs, but the rest is pretty average to me. I think his album "Here, My Dear" is ten times better.

Nirvana - Nevermind

There are some excellent songs on the album but it seems like people hold it up like it's the holy grail of modern rock. How many Nirvana fans know about "Surfer Rosa" by the Pixies, which Cobain said he tried to imitate? I think the album led to some great things in music but the album itself, in my opinion, is overrated. "In Utero" seems to capture their rawness better, but I suppose that is partly due to Steve Albini producing it (who incidentally produced Surfer Rosa).

Of coarse, Brian Wilson admitted, if he hadn't heard the Beatles' Rubber Soul, he may never have been challenged to make Pet Sounds.

The Mars Volta - "De-Loused in the Comatorium"

Although I do enjoy it, I think people give the band more credit than they deserve.

As more my overrated pick...as much as I love Radiohead I find The Bends is overrated. Some of their best work is on that album, but as a whole I just don't think it's as good as many potray it.

The again it was only thier second album but still...
