My personal view is that you should immediatly try to learn with a powerful software... If you don't, you'll never try to upgrade.

First : ProTools and Cubase are the very best ones. Anyone saying the contrary is either stupid or ignorant. NotaBene : If you want to run a ProTools, you need a special soundcard (or simply Win98 for ProTools lite) called MBox.

Fruity Loops Studio is a powerful tool for beginners. It's a kind of (very very very) light version of ProTools.
You should also give a try to Propellerhead Reason, or things like that... It's like having a synthesizer. You can do many sorts of things with it...

And if you only want to work with samples, why don't you try a simple sequencer, like Magix Music Maker (it's the one I use... it's very limited but I work really fast with it) or maybe some E-Jay softwares...

I've been a Cubase user for some time now but I wouldn't suggest that for a 'complete beginner'. For one it is very expensive and secondly it has a fairly steep learning curve.

I have heard that 'Garage Band' is good...but may be only Mac...I'm not sure...and people were using Crystal for a while but I can't seem to locate that software on the net for some reason...as Alternator said, many are using Fruity Loops with decent results.

If you are a beginner, you don't want to spend a ton of money on expensive software. I use MidiNotate Composer for creating and editing my music. I can use it to sequence the parts I can't play, and to work up the printed parts for those I do play acoustically. It's awesome! You can download a free MidiNotate Player, or a free 30 day, fully functional trial version of MidiNotate Musician or MidiNotate Composer at https://www.plimus.com/jsp/download_...harbor1 <br /> Use it to check out the sheet music for some of my songs on the MidiNotate User's Community Forum at http://www.notation.com/cgi-bin/discus/discus.cgi. You can also use it to view and play the sheet music for any midi file.

I do like Reason. For making your own songs or remixing others it do anything you could want to do. It is expensive software, but it is possible to get cracked versions for free.
Listened to Pink Floyd with Careful With That Axe, Eugene

Try FlexiMusic Composer If you dont have any music knowledge for making your songs easily without any musical instrument, just with the PC.
