I am sorry that I don't have more time to respond at this time. I will respond in more detail if needed, when I get back.

Some Jazz related threads of interest. I personally don't agree with all the choices, but it gives you a good idea of many different sub-genres of jazz.

Thank you Satchmo, I've been craving some new Jazz and usually go off of http://www.radiomute.com/musicthread11654.html but it is quite a large list!

That list is a master list, that Seba put together from everyone that recommended something. You can go through the rest of the thread, to see each person's individual recommendations.

I agree...indeed Kyuss rocks...especially 'blues for the red sun'.
As for Monster Magnet...they lost me on 'Dopes To Infinity'. The record before that was called 'Superjudge' and man it rocked HARD!! Easily their best record. It is very hard to find now though...every music store I go into only had 'Dopes To Infinity' or some of their later commercial stuff...

If you enjoy the mellow side of some of the singer/songwriter genre try Five For Fighting...strong cds...

Female singer/songwriters? Try Sarah Harmer...what a way with words...

we'll have to agree to disagree on monster magnet smorg. i think they peaked on 'dopes' but superjudge and spine of god are just as good.

as for air i really like the virgin suicides soundtrack but it's a much darker album. moon safari is probably still their best work.

as for the queens of the stone age. they started out as a duo between josh homme and nick oliveri so they always had other musicians sitting in to fill out the record and tours. grohl played drums on rated R and did a few shows with them, he also stuck around long enough to be featured quite prominently on their first video for the album (coincidence??? ha) the band isn't broken up though, oliveri quit / got fired about a year ago and homme has been going at it solo with a crazy amount of guest musician for a new qotsa album (pj harvey, alain johannes, billy gibbons, brody dalle). you might also want to check out homme's desert session albums.

I really find it hard to classify 311 and Janes Addiction with RHCP, I'd like to say each one has more of their own style.

I'll check out that Virgin Suicides soundtrack because I need more Air!

Any albums for artists like Zero 7 that you would consider being good places to start?

i hear you on jane's and 311 being a little off from the chilis. i think the main reason 311 gets mentionned with them is their fusion of funky raggae with hard rock. as for jane's i think the main reason is just that they were both unclassifiable bands from LA who started getting big at the same time.

as for zero7 definitely start with their 'simple things' album. i haven't heard their latest but AMG said it fell a little short from their debut. you might also like blue states they're similar to Air but a little more downbeat, the album i have is called 'nothing changes under the sun'.

Yes, this is definitely one of the major problems around these forums...
