I'll have to go with "indifferent". I've heard a few of his recordings, but don't really care for them, not that they offend me or anything.

His sound is a little too polished and contrived for my tastes, a bit too far to the right by way of adult contemporary if you know what I mean, but he's obviously a decent enough guitarist. I may check into some of his more recent works, but mostly I've been unimpressed by his catalogue.

He's okay. It's guitar music...which is usually pretty bland.

I hope you're joking. I certainly wouldn't call Sonny Sharrock, Fred Frith, or Nels Cline "bland"...

Although I don't 'love' Metheny's music I do 'like' his work, overall, and love some of it. He has a creative streak that just keeps evolving. Never a sell out. Always something interesting going on as a composer, and a unique voice on the guitar. His recorded output is WAY too broad to characterize as being too slick or limp. Yeah, it takes some digging to get your ears past the popular easy beat Brazilian based stuff that comes off as trite on the surface. Yet even within that genre, Metheny delivers accessable, solid, relatively low sugar content music.

His early ECM recordings were examples of what was good about acoustic pastoral guitar before new age was a gleam in some A&R guy's eye. His Pat Metheny Group (ECM) recording does fusionesqe jazz proud. As Falls Wichita, So Falls Wichita Falls rolls into trippy soundscape territory. He's done plenty of projects with stand up, no b. s. jazzers - 80/81, Question and Answer, Missouri Skies. He's explored the edges of jazz with Ornette Coleman on Song X. For the noise heads out there he recorded the truely toxic Zero Tolerance for Silence.

So, I guess I would like to see a voting catagory somewhere between "love" and "indifferent" before I would vote.

P.S. - A tip of the cap to Lyle Mays, Metheney's long time collaborator and keyboardist. An unsung talent.

I have to admit what I've heard hasn't inspired me to hear more. I roomed with a guy in college who was a big fan, so I heard a lot of it. Never really touched me in any way.

But Thelonious Monk... whoa... wrong thread...
