What Is DSP?

What is DSP and what does it do? I read somewhere that Autechre used alot of DSP "work" (or whatever you call it) on their Confield album, and that got me very curious. Does anyone here use it or have before? Keef? Anyone?

I believe it stands for Digital Signal Processing, but beyond that I have no f'n clue what it entails exactly. I know I've heard of it, ugh.

Hmm that sounds familiar. DO you know if it has anything to do with manipulating the time signature?

As I understand it, it`s just the type of procesor chips used in todays digital synths. This would only mean that Confield was made on a compact music system instead of wiring numerous different synths for processing to create the rich sound (which they did before), I believe.

As far as I understand, DSP just means that you are changing the sound digitally. Let's say you have a recording of a guitar. Then you add some reverb to that. That's DSP.

I might be completely wrong though =P

Yeah, DSP literally means an effect that is done digitally. The term came into being when Digital started to appear and previously all effects had been analogue, with vakves etc.

DSP is just a catch all term like FX except FX also means it can be analog.
