As long as he is not seen as one of the "best Metal drummers", Ulrich isn´t overrated. He´s good, but surely has his limitations. It´s a pretty well-known fact, that, on albums like "Justice for all", his drum tracks had been sliced together from several takes, simply because Lars was unable to deliver satisfying results in only one specific take, like most quality drummers.
Thinking about overrated drummers, the 1st, who comes to my mind is: Keith Moon

Well, its quite obvious that he is'nt overrated if he isnt seen as one of the "best Metal drummers". that's like the whole point about being overrated. i don't know about Keith Moon. A lot of ppl says he's so damn brilliant but i can't really see what's so damn brilliant with him, but he sure was a skilled drummer.

Really? I have heard Metallica live in concert numerous times and he played spot on, and they played numerous tracks from 'And Justice For All'. Oh, and I think putting several takes together happens quite often in many bands.

Yeah, really! I´ve heard some bootlegs on which Ulrich "simplifies" some rather tricky parts.
And putting several tracks together is pretty common, yeah, but not in the case of drum tracks.

I wouldn´t say it´s obvious, morphe, surely not to some, who consider Ulrich to be an average or weak drummer.
IMO Moon was good at playing flashy fills, but that´s about where his skills ended. His sense for timing was clearly below average, his bass drum playing sloppy and his hi-hat technique rudimentary. Anyway, I still love the energy in his playing and his showmanship.

I think Ringo Starr is quite overrated. Many people say he is the best drummer in the world. But the songs that he played were quite simple and he wasn't very innovative, so I'd say there are/were many other drummers (also to his time) that are/were better than him.

i don't know if u got the point with my post. i alost think he's an average drummer.
the meaning with my post was that if people don't overrate a drummer he's not overrated

Hrothgar, i agree with you. It's kinda same thing with Lars. Just becaouse they play in brilliant bands, they automatically become incredible drummers.

I don't think he's near among the greatest, but he did have a few innovations. I believe he was one of the first drummers to use a pillow in his bass drum. As well, his drum fills in A Day In The Life are pretty complex, some of his best.
