I should get into them as well... one of the many...
isn't disco volante seen as their best? I seem to remember that from the countless Panbient/Seba/... discussions in any thread slightly related to Mike Patton

well a lot of people consider disco volante to be the peak of the band. personally it's probably the album i've listened to least. oddly enough it's the only one i own at the moment, both my roommates have the other cds though hehehe.

the first album (self-titled) is definately one of the top funk metal albums of the early 90s. way heavier than anything the chili peppers could dream of, and with a lot more emphasis on chaotic funk than faith no more put out on the real thing.

the difference between 'disco volante' and 'california' is basically the difference between absolute chaos and refined chaos. DV is just full on chaos from the start to the finish songs blur into one and other for the majority of the album and you're just left completely blasted by the whole deal. basically when you hear stuff from DV it doesn't sound like anything else besides disco volante.

california, on the other hand, is polished and refined and about as close to sane as mr. bungle ever got. each song is a self composed unit, nice and tight, with its own feel and style which remains generally constistent throughout the song (unlike DV). the chaos shows itself once you look at the album as a whole and the collection of songs gathered within.

personally my favorite is california. i'll have to give a listen to DV again one day though, the old man secret song in the middle of 'carry stress in the jaw' does kick a huge pile of ass after all

Fortunately, I got to see them live on their last tour right before I got the latest CD. Haha!

I just got California by Mr. Bungle a couple weeks ago. I think it's great. I'm probably going to order the other 2 from Amazon when I have some money. They are one of my new favorite bands. Recommendations, from all I've heard, Goodbye Sober Day, Ars Moriendi, Retrovertigo, or..eh...just the entire California album.

I'd recommend one of the other side projects called "Fantomas".
