All the Industrial talk has been deported to the Avant-Garde forum, just so you know (( in case Equinox decides to move this thing ))

In any case, the absolutely essential Einsturzende Neubauten:

Zeichnungen Des Patienten O.T.
Halber Mensch
Kollaps
Fuenf Auf Der Nach OBen Offenen Richterskala
Haus Der Luge

And Coil:

Horse Rotorvator
Love's Secret Domain
Scatology
Musick to Play in the Dark

Get any of those releases and I seriously doubt you'll be dissapointed.

Well, Einsturzende Neubauten was always considered industrial, while Coil was sort of both industrial and electronic in a sense. I'll keep this here, I don't mind

I also like the American History series...

Thanks for making this thread (and keeping it) because all I have are various mp3's of both artists, and Im making a trip to the library soon to feed my iTunes.

coil - love's secret domain.

but i wouldnt start there, get something like black light district, less acsessible. wait until you can digest that before getting spoiled by the poppy stuff. it took me over 6 months to really enjoy BLD, and then coming to LSD and horse rotorvator was awesome.

they have influenced electronic artists, so guess we can relax about the whole branding stuff.

I couldn't get into LSD at all, didn't dig it. Too poppy, too calm, too blah, I guess. I realize it's significance, but meh. Maybe I should give it another listen? I think Astral Disaster was my first, so I started with the floaty ambient stuff, and got into the solid industrial clang a bit later. Scatology is my favorite, followed by Horse Rotovator and Musick to Play in the Dark.

As for Einstuerzende; Halber Mensch is my favorite of theirs. Their really old stuff, such as Zeichnungen Des Patienten O.T., Strategien Gegen Architekturen, and the like, are really minimal clangy inaccessable things. I still don't quite get some of it. Their middle years are my favorite. Halber Mensch, Haus der Luege. I think it combines the pure fury, experimental tendancies, and rythmic bits quite well. Their new stuff is really melodic and calm with occasional outburts of wrath to catch you with your pants down. Keeps you on your toes, I guess. Those albums mostly being Silence is Sexy and Perpetuum Mobile. All worth hearing, but I think the middle is a good place to start.

Both are great bands, and by great, I mean two of my absolute favorites, and two that I would consider to be of the best and most influential ever. I doubt you will be dissapointed with anything you select from either.
