I started listening to IDM, ambient almost exclusively, when hip hop sold out and i couldn't relate to rock and roll anymore (1997)

personally i feel NIN and GODFLESH were particulary influential for me.

also TALK TALK which was the first rock with atmospheric qualities that i heard. many articles and interviews that i read cite TALK TALK as an early influence for the electronic atmospheric movement of today.

autechre is a nice suit for metal heads, just like phonem or aphex twin or even amon tobin and squarepusher.

I agree with everything you just said. Like i mentioned earlier, NIN was pivitol (sp?) for me. I love Godflesh, but I cant find any of their stuff in record stores. I only have like 1 half of Us As Them

my first approach to godflesh was streetcleaner (perhaps one of the most groundbreaking albums of alltime) and later got my hands on godflesh and slavestate (superb)

i recomend you "pure", very smooth: slow deep hip hop drums and beautiful guitar riffs.

...and if you try any Scorn album from the mid 90's, up to 2003, they basically all sound the same though, but still good.

collectively, i have about 20 albums with him on them

In my childhood I mostly listened to Classical, Blues, Rock & New Wave. My Cousin Stephan got me in NWOBHM when I was around 10. A few years later I met others into Metal. I then was introduced to Thrash, Doom, Power, Progressive, Death & Black Metal. I was basically addicted to Viking & Black in my late teens through my late 20s. Once in a while I'd listen to Industrial and Electronic etc... I figured I needed to broaden my horizons and searched for a music forum of various genres. RM has been really helpful, especially the posters Evilmatik, Equinox, Seba and Satchmo.
