I've been slowly inching my way into the catalogue of the great Bud Powell, and was wondering what RM's wise sages of Jazz have to say in regard to their top 5 Powell recordings to help me along.

I've got some more surplus income to devote to music, and already worship him as a pianist, so I'm open to any and all suggestions.

I don't really have time to get into much detail but Bud would be 2nd on my list of overall favorite piano players. I am sure you can guess who at least one other of the top three might be.

The Blue Note recordings, all of which have been RVGed and reissued


The Verve box, if only for the first disc in it. I think they did put out a reissue of the first disc. Have to check later what the title for the single cd would be.

There are several from his later period that are classics.

In Bud's case, you can find less then great recordings, but you can't blame the man. He was never the same after NYC cops went upside his head. Using his head as if it was a baseball, and they were playing a 9-inning game.

However, I would take messed up Bud, over a great many piano players.
