Question Best Mid-Range Monitor Headphones

First off, I like to consider myself to be an audiophile -- at least to the extent that I pay very close attention to the subtle details in all recordings. Secondly, I listen to music exclusively with stereo headphones, and for long periods of time.

That said, I've been using Yamaha's RH5MA Stereo Monitor headphones for years -- they offer fantastic sound for a semi-open set -- perfect highs, crisp mids, and a comfortable bass. They have wonderful cord length, and are reasonably comfortable, but more importantly, they're a steal at $40-$50 retail.

Now, I've gone through probably 1 pair per year for the past 5 years due to excessive use and wear, and given their price tag I can afford to do this. Overall, I've been very happy with them for the most part, even if they tend to become a bit uncomfortable when used for long periods.

All that said, I'm just looking to try something different, as I'm sure better options do exist. A while back, a friend of mine let me hear a set of his $300 Sennheiser's, and if I do recall I was fairly impressed with their sound quality (( not to mention comfort!!! )). So if anyone has any suggestions or concerns in regard to that brand, please let me know, as I may head in that direction, at least in regard to their less-expenseive end (( although, I have heard that you almost nead a pre-amp to properly listen to most music with their products... ))

Basically, I'm looking for a solid set of studio-quality headphones with very accurate sound reproduction on all frequencies that are comfortable to wear, preferably with a cord of decent length (( I've gotten used to the 8' cord on my Yamahas )), and most importantly, I'm looking for a set that is in the sub-$150 range, if possible.

Thanks for any help in advance.

Thanks! I'll look into those.

Have you checked into Grado or Sennheiser? Overall, the Grado's sound better but Sennheiser's are more comfortable.

Grado

Sennheiser

There is also Beyer Dynamic.

Thanks for the info, Lady Day. And yes, I've looked into Seinheissers, but I've heard that they have horrible reproduction in terms of volume...

Sorry, since you said you’re an audiophile, I thought you had an amp. My brothers use Seinheisser's. My sisters use the Beyer Dynamic, and I use a Grado.

Try this one. A friend uses it without an amp and for his system and computer. You can get one for under $150.

Sennheiser HD 555

This is what I would suggest for a portable, and it's under $40. It's what I use for my portables.

Sennheiser PX100

I've been looking into getting one, but haven't yet. Depending on the money situation, I may just go ahead and get one.

I do have to say that I'm loving that headphone site -- so much information and products! It's just what I was looking for.
