The things you discover with obsessive audiophiles in the family. They will remain nameless.

I just felt like mentioning that I did end up getting a pair of Sennheiser HD 280 Pros for around $110 a few months ago. I had initial problems with them distorting in the extreme high / low end spectrums, but sent them back for a replacement pair, and am so-far very pleased with the new ones. I will say that they don't have as much bass or mids as the Yamahas I used to use, but over all, I'm not complaining, and they sound great with my PowerBook even without an amp. They have huge advantages in terms of isolation and comfort, although I'm not sure what idiot designed the spiral cord -- it always manages to tangle-up onto itself.

i'll second that suggestion of the sony mdr-7506. they have a really nice and accurate sound (unlike a lot of other "high end" sony headphones that have way to much bass), and theyre pretty durable aside from the ear pads, which are cheap. the headphones are about $150, i think. all of the audio engineers i know through my uncle (works at npr) use them

If you were going to spend that kind of money, I would have added $40 and picked up the Sennheiser HD 555.

Well, it's something to consider for the future. I was basically just going by the glowing review at headphone.com: "Our highest marks for the best sounding sealed headphone. And not expensive either!"

I take it, you missed my son's post above?

Sennheiser HD 555

This is what I would suggest for a portable, and it's under $40. It's what I use for my portables.

Sennheiser PX100

So the $99 price tag was enticing. (( even if I ended up paying $10 for shipping anyway... ))

So, I won't mention to her that the 555 looked better as well.

I figured that was the real deciding factor.
