Minimal/Micro House

Anyone here give it much of a listen? I'm talking about stuff like Ricardo Villalobos, Swayzak, Akufen, and Matthew Dear. I've been listening to it a lot lately. I would describe it as combining housey grooves with idm-ish complexity, along with a fair bit of the glitchy aspect. Nice to see what appears to be a more forward-thinking mentality to the generally placid house arena.

Suggested listening:
Ricardo Villalobos - Thé au Harem d'Archimède
False - Sink The Ship
Matthew Dear - EP2
Swayzak - Make Up Your Mind

Labels like Perlon, Playhouse, and Kompakt.

I know, that two of my sisters are into Michael Mayer, Luomo, Isolée, and Ricardo Villalobos. There are probably others, but those I am sure of.

minimalism basically means "using as little notes as possible when producing a work". Hardly changing as "Minimal" describes. If you minimize something, you break it down to the lowest of levels and work with what you have.

Steve Reich's "Music for 18 Musicians" is a good example of traditional minimal music, but when it comes to minimal house, you should take a listen to the labels that twoplow listed. Kompakt especially.

Other good labels for this would be Force Inc. or Force Tracks and some of the Early to late Mille Plateaux stuff.

Yeah, I've heard, "Mille Plateaux" around quite a bit. I think I'm going to have to take a look into that.

Personally, I don't think that most of this stuff is particularly, "Minimal" persay. While it may have long phrases and less melody, the songs themselves tend to have many layers. Is that what minimal means these days? Either way, that's the name of the genre, so I go with it. At least it's better than calling a genre, "Progressive."

yeah, i don't understand all the subgenres of House music. You have Tech House, Progressive House, Trance House and the list goes on and on...

I do agree that the Villalobos stuff is good. You might want to check out Dub Taylor and Benjamin Wild too...good stuff.

Even check out Luomo's traditional moniker, Vladislav Delay.

Genre whoring is a funny thing. Genres simultaneously cause more strife than anything else in the music world, while being incredibly useful for categorization and suggestion.

I was originally afraid that I wouldn't really get any feedback on this topic. Nice to see I was wrong. I'll be sure to look into your suggestions.

well, as much as I grew up loving the house of the early 90's, i quickly quit liking it once I heard Aphex Twin, and from there I almost hated it . But as the years progressed, I slowly got back into it as labels such as Kompakt and Mille Plateaux showcased artists that could use the 4/4 House beats in different ways.

If you check any artist out, check out Wolfgang Voight's Gas moniker. The albums he's produced under that name: "Gas", "Zauberberg", "Modern", "oktember", Konigsforst" and "Pop" are ALL magnificent. Something I would term 'ambient house'. Also check out another label called Auftrieb. I believe that's his own personal label. He also had about 30 other monikers to check out

Yeah, that guy is rediculously prolific. I've heard a fair number of his releases (It's impossible not to have, with how many he has), most notably a track under the Freiland alias, Dunkelgruen. It was great.

Well, Aphex Twin is a pretty good way to go from that. Can't mess with Quoth. I love those early Warp techno releases. LFO and such. Prefer it to a lot of the recent IDM stuff, actually.

Have you heard any of the releases on Ghostly International? I think you would like that label a lot. Blurring the lines between ambient and house. Mesmerizing.

I have almost everything that Ghostly International has put out

Their style goes quite further than an ambient/house type, but also goes in a hip hop direction with Hip Hop and even the glitch/IDM/ambient release by Cepia "Dowry"...the James Cotton release is actually quite good (another Dabrye/Tadd Mullinix moniker).
