Pretty Things anyone?

SF Sorrow is generally regarded as the original concept album, predating Tommy by a couple years. Any lovers of Parachute? Real Pretty? Discuss. NM

It might be the first Rock concept recording but it's not the first concept album. That would be, The Chairman of the Board's Songs for Young Lovers.

I don't know if everyone's going to get this reference, and to be honest, I'm not sure I do either!

In any case, I don't own a single Sinatra record at this time. (( time for another ? )) Would you suggest this as a starting point?

If you ask me (and you didn't) if you don't need "In the wee small hours" then you don't need ANY Sinatra.

As for Pretty Things, I think their Psychedelic stuff is pretty faboo.
I know them more for their Stones type stuff but I've got some comps and their tracks SMOKE.
A sort of generic psychedelia in a way but I think that's what's really marvelous about it.

I think their Psychedelic stuff gets more famous as time goes by and it deserves to.

You really can't go wrong with most of Old Blue Eyes' recordings.

That's a classic as is these other uptempo recordings

Come Dance With Me
A Swingin' Affair!
Ring-a ding ding!
Sinatra at the Sands w/Count Basie's Orchestra
Songs for Swingin' Lovers!
Come Fly with Me

If you want really depressed, heartbroken, and suicidal Sinatra then

In the We Small Hours - He had just broken up with Ava Gardner.

Down but not suicidal

Only The Lonely

The Voice, in his later years

September of My Years

All of them have been reissued.

Yo!

Well, with Digger's "OK" and a description like that, I suppose I'm just going to have to pick this one up first, no questions asked...

Thanks for the other suggestions as well, Satch...helpful as always.

The first thing on my list would be the "Live at the Sands" album. You can taste the jack Daniels.

all good stuff!
however, I think the suicidal tone of '...wee small hours' and to a certain extent 'only the lonely' are MUCH more to my liking.

The arrangements are more restrained and effective to me.
I like ALL the Go Crazy Koo-Koo with Frank stuff but the arrangements are practically Lawrence Welk in terms of BOUNCY. 'September of my Years' ranks real high with the Dig-Man but I think Nelson Riddle (or whoever's) arrangements are WAY too busy.

Well, compared to music to get a bowl of warm water and a straight razor out to.
Ava Gardner broke that dude's heart.
And I, for one, am eternally grateful.
