free jazz
what do you think about free jazz. i feel they are some of the most intence artists because of the limits they push with themselves and each other. its an incredible unity when they can play together and have no limits to where they go. people like ed blackwell, milford graves, kidd jordan and roswell rudd just to name a few. speak your mind

When did mediocrity and banality become a good image for your children? I want my children to listen to people who fucking ROCKED! I don't care if they died in puddles of their own vomit! I want someone who plays from his fucking HEART!" bill hicks

I am quite an enthusiast of this genre. So many names: Cecil Taylor, Latter years John Coltrane, Marion Brown, Peter Brotzmann, Albert Ayler, Evan Parker, Sunny Murray, & the list will just continue on my behalf!

A few of these might be more free improvistional.
John Coltrane
Cecil Taylor
Eric Dolphy
Albert Ayler
Ornette Coleman
Joe McPhee
Mats Gustafsson
Evan Parker
Andrew Cyrille
I am not sure if these would be considered free jazz or avant, but I also like:
Charles Mingus
Anthony Braxton
Steve Lacy
Sun Ra
Don Pullen
Roscoe Mitchell
Paul Bley
Jimmy Lyons
Elvin Jones
some groups that I like
The Art Ensemble of Chicago
Ganelin Trio
Italian Instabile Orchestra
London Jazz Composers Orchestra
World Saxophone Quartet
Peter Brotzmann Chicago Octet/Tentet
There're a lot more that I like.

free jazz is where they put no limits on what they do with their music, they go off into their own worlds and just play but somehow it stays together kind of. its really quite amazing when they sound really tight with no limits
