I am not sure if these would be considered free jazz or avant, but I also like:

Charles Mingus
Anthony Braxton
Steve Lacy
Sun Ra
Don Pullen
Roscoe Mitchell
Paul Bley
Jimmy Lyons
Elvin Jones

some groups that I like

The Art Ensemble of Chicago
Ganelin Trio
Italian Instabile Orchestra
London Jazz Composers Orchestra
World Saxophone Quartet
Peter Brotzmann Chicago Octet/Tentet

There're a lot more that I like.

I would actually consider Dolphy more Avant. I would consider Braxton & Lacy free to some extent. Have you heard Steve Lacy's Moon or The Forest & The Zoo? Those present his more free moments. As for Braxton, a few of his albums would be considered free, have you heard his duos with Derek Bailey? They aren't the greatest, but they are fair. Paul Bley could be considered free on certain moments such as his trio performance with Evan Parker & Barre Phillips or with Jimmy Giuffre & Steve Swallow.

I'll cease at this point... :P

It is a safe bet to say, that I have heard a good deal of the recordings Pops has in his collection. Including those that I mentioned.

no mingus was not by any stretch of the means free he was fucking amazing however, but not free. free is where they start with something and just work their way out without practicing chords or anything to go over. beats are even sometimes changed in the middle of the song. its unity. jazz=pure damn goodness

When did mediocrity and banality become a good image for your children? I want my children to listen to people who fucking ROCKED! I don't care if they died in puddles of their own vomit! I want someone who plays from his fucking HEART!" bill hicks

You could call Mingus' later works avant, but no he wasn't free jazz.

You do realize that what you have been describing in this thread is not Free Jazz? It's Free improv.

I'm gonna start a thread called 'Good Stuff' so people won't need to worry about which 8 or 9 labels are appropriate for what they want to discuss.

But first I gotta wash the dishes.

Ever see that Mingus documentary?
whatever his proper label is, it's a must!

You know, I was going to add some more responses to this thread to clear things up, but I just knew you'd be lurking around here somewhere to save me the trouble!

Really, what would this site be without our resident ultra-superior prick...
