I don't see any reason to hate this girl so much. Her music isn't my cup of tea, but so what? She isn't pretending to be anything she isn't. Any contradictions in her image is largely a creation of the media. Sure she doesn't write everything herself, but neither do most artists (covers, collaborations, producers, etc, etc). The foundation of rock music was made by songwriters giving songs to singers, not singer-songwriters. She isn't going out of her way to cater to the mainstream market, she is what she is. Maybe what she is happens to lack a lot of substance, but she isn't claiming to be the second coming. All she is is a girl that's playing some music. Get a life before clawing your eyes out over it.

You say she's not pretending to be anything she's not. She's actually is...tough, rough skater girl...I don't think so.

You aslo say most artists don't write their own songs....what do you listen too? Even in the pop world I wouldn't be sure that most people didn't write their own material. That's one big statement you made there and anyone who doesn't do their own work doesn't deserve the credit.

After saying that, I don't know why you don't realise why people dislike her.

To all of the above:

Avril Lavigne did NOT come out and announce to the world that she's a punk girl. The marketing machine of the music industry seized on her and created this image of her. There was an interview with her where they ask her about her skateboarding, and the only part that made it into the article was something like "yeah I love to skate, I do it whenever I can" but left out the rest of her comment which was something like "but I'm really bad at it. I don't care though, I just have fun hanging out with my friends."

Everyone that's claiming to be defending the true "punk" mentality better reconsider what that mentality is. The punk mentality is the defense of being allowed to do whatever the hell you want and not getting ragged on for it. Not having to conform. Now you're demanding that she conform to your definition of punk or of any number of other things. You're just as hypocritical as you're accusing her of being.

Everytime i see her in interviews she's really moody & non commitalal in her answers & i just think kids are buying your records therefore keeping you in pocket miss snotty pants. I personally couldn't give a toss what she claims or other people claim her to be i just can't see past the attitude....sorry...

People are more than welcome to dislike her music, in fact *I* dislike her music for the most part. And if her attitude turns you off, then by all means, dislike her. But to attack her as being the antichrist (an argument I've heard many times) is extremely ridiculous.

Yeah...I remeber her saying she was punk too only to later say that she wasn't (probably after a lot of criticism). She is a puppet too...good words panbient. Anyway, I hate her music but her image detracts from her as a person, not her music.

Also, I'm sure she could easily say to the people that dress her that she wants to dress how she wants to...there has to be a bit from both ways, especially seeing that she's a brat in real life I don't think she'd get pushed into something she didn't like.

She may be a puppet, although I personally think that the media has overblown her image, building her up so they can tear her down, and that to a large extent it's out of her control. And ya know, while I doubt that she's really tried to cultivate an image as a punk rocker (because even SHE isn't that dumb, but the media is), from what I've heard everyone complaining about, a lot of the things that she does and the way that she acts is quite punk (whether you like it or not). She came out with an original style, she's a brat to everyone, she bashes mainstream music (even while becoming a part of it)...sounds pretty punk to me.
