UK Music Hall of Fame

What do people here think of this show on Channel 4, and the overall concept of picking the greatest artists by vote from each decade between the 1950s and the 1990s, to enter them into some sort of UK Music Hall of Fame?

Well I suppose that with Channel 4 there is at least a chance that it will be a little less contrived and commercial than if ITV had done it, but it still sounds like the results won't hold too many surprises. Then again, at least it involves a public vote, rather than one part of the mainstream record industry deciding that another part of the mainstream record industry should receive some spurious honour, in the hope of reviving sales.

It includes both British and american artists, and in fact most of those featured are Americans. Just those artists who have had an influence in Britain since the 1950s.

Robbie Williams represents the 1990s,
Michael Jackson the 1980s,
Queen the 1970s,
the Rolling Stones the 1960s,
while Cliff Richard represents the 1950s.

Your thoughts on those who were chosen by public vote please.

Robbie Williams is way out of place on there.

Even among the 10 bands you could vote for in the '90s category, I'd have Robbie Williams way down the list after Radiohead, Nirvana, Prodigy, Blur and RHCP. I've never heard of Missy Elliot or Dr Dre, so ignoring them I can't choose between Williams, Oasis and the Spice Girls for last place.

You see, this is what happens when a panel of "industry experts" chooses the shortlist from which the public votes. So, for the '70s you have Pink Floyd, The Clash, Led Zeppelin and the Sex Pistols amongst others to choose from, and Queen wins. Says more about the average Channel 4 viewer than it does about the quality of the bands.
