The Essentials by Genre thread

I think it might be a good idea to have this for the general forum as an easy pointer to the different genres. We could have five each from each of the music sections in the forum, ie
Rock
-Metal
-Punk
-Progressive | Psychedelic
Electronic
Pop
-Alternative
Rap | Hip Hop
Avant-Garde | Experimental
Jazz
World | Folk
Reggae | Dub | Ska, Country
Blues | Funk | R&B

The way I see it maybe one person could suggest one artist/album at a time and for it to get to the list(which I could edit into this post) has to be supported by two more members.

Could this work...?

Man, if I knew this thread was going to be this dead I wouldn't have bothered coming up with that big-ass list!

Great lists though. Seems you and Field Hippy are the only ones who seem to have enough knowledge of all the various genres to recommend something for everything. I like all kinds of music and have a little of everything in my collection but feel I'm only competent in the rock/alternative/pop genres to speak with any conviction about anything. I bet most people feel like that too.

Interesting idea, though Chiron.

I bet if Satch would read this thread he'd have some ideas as well.

I'm scared to see Satch's list. Knowing how he responds to suggestion type threads, we'll probably see 10-20 essential albums per genre!

I at least tried to keep it concise.

Well, I'm hardly an expert. I listen to all genres, but I obviously haven't listened to everything from all genres, so I can only suggest what I like. They may not be the "absolute best choies" for each genre, but they should work well enough as starting points, I'd think...
