Straylight Run - S/T
This four-member band has not done too bad for itself. I love this album...two ex-Taking Back Sunday members do a better job than their former band on thier new album. Fans of Taking Back Sunday would be surprised to see that it is not the sound of music they would expect...more keyboard and piano, a more soulful sound. Highlights of the album include "Existenstialism on Prom Night" and "Mistakes We Knew We Were Making". Can't seem to find a song that I don't approve of. The only thing that could use some work is John Nolan's voice...at some points he doesn't sound all that great.
Overall: 4.5 out of 5

this cd rocks. it's a lot slower than TBS music and it is extremely melodic. existentialism on our prom night is a solid track, and the whole cd is very soothing. I'd recommend it for sure. i want to see them live.

Emo started out as emocore. The idea of emocore is pretty simple, it was an offshoot of hardcore with really emotional lyrics. Some emocore bands of note are Rites of Spring and Embrace. Then along came a band (sunny day something, I can't entirely remember it and don't feel like lookin it up) that took emocore and gave it more of an alt. rock sound. This band released their first album on a indie label with plenty of cred (I think it was Sub Pop) so naturally the band got a substantial following. At this point it was only a matter of time until some more bands came along with a more radio ready version of the kind of music that sunny day had created. Most notably of these bands is Jimmy Eat World. Next came stuff like Dashboard Confessional with the most angsty stuff of all. And then finally we land at Straylight Run, where the bad teen poetry is at it's height.
And that, is what emo is.

You started out correctly, then it just started going downhill from there. How is a term to describe bands like Moss Icon, Native Nod and Rites of Spring suddenly used for Dashboard Confessional? Dashboard is in no way emo, at all. They're acoustic-alternative-rock.
Modern day emo bands is stuff like Cap'n Jazz. They stay true to the emotional hardcore roots, but give it more of an indie feel. Fugazi is also another good example.

I was under the impression that Emo is central entirely to the lyrics, which are generally introspective. For the most part, these lyrics suck. Hard.
I had also that that Emo as a genre is a spin-off of the Smashing Pumpkins lyrical style, with the repetitive loud-to-soft dynamics that started with alt bands in the 80's raped to death.
Or at least that's what I'd thought.
