Old (hardly used) scales

So has anyone here ever written anything using ONLY the Whole Tone Scale or Melodic Minor? No key changes or additional notes.

I did a Whole Tone piece about 7 years ago, but it (admittedly) sucked fairly hard.

im gonna get my copy of debussy's preludes out right now...

the second prelude is almost entirely whole tone

i have to say, i enjoyed debussy a good deal more before i learned what the whole tone scale was..

this is a pretty comprehensive list of scales : http://www.apassion4jazz.net/scales2.html

Yeah, I used to fiddle with all these old scales, but not really any more.

I might have a try with the melodic minor as that's a fairly odd one with quite specific rules. Sometimes it's good to see what you can do when you give yourself a limit. I suppose it exercises your composing arm.

hmmm, why are the melodic and harmonic minor scales 'old' and hardly used? I thought almost all western minor music was either melodic or harmonic??

I don't think Melodic minor is what you're thinking...

Melodic minor in the key of C is this...

On the way up C-D-Eb-F-G-A-B On the way down C-Bb-Ab-G-F-Eb-D

It was used for choir vocals in something like the 17th century (my music history is REALLY sketchy)

Yeah, that's the one... Isn't that used when writing minor melodies? I could be completely wrong... I probably am...
