I am nowhere near as acquainted with his music as Chris, but from what I have heard of his solo-work I basically agree with Tanjello, though I might change my opinion if I'd listen more to it... His voice still sounds ace and the lyrics are still witty and intriguing, but the music doesn't seem to have the same grip without Marr on board... That's what I thought about his greatest hits album... I have to admit liking most of the songs I heard from his latest, You Are The Quarry, so that might be a good start... Though Chris would probably direct you towards Vauxhall and I and Your Arsenal... Anyway, looking at this thread might be insightful...

sorry for the lateness of my reply.

now, first off, let me take on your comment/concern that Strangeways, Here We Come is not The Smiths best album and/or not the best place to start. iwouldnt necessarily say that. while it is widely maintained that The Queen Is Dead is The Smiths' greatest album both Morrissey and Marr claim that it is in fact Strangeways... that is The Smiths' masterpiece. itend to agree with both, vascilating between the two, normally dependent on which ive most recently listened to [rightnow its Strangeways...]. as far as where to start with The Smiths, ive always been a believer that the beginning is the best place for most [save certain exceptions like Radiohead where id never recommend Pablo Honey], so id say The Smiths self-titled debut would be best, but it doesnt really matter. ireally started with The Singles compilation as my first real substantive intro Morrissey and The Smiths and my first Smiths purchases were Meat Is Murder, The Queen Is Dead and Strangeways, Here We Come simultaneously. despite my suggestion that its best to start off with The Smiths, it certainly hasnt hampered me any in my love of The Smiths' music. also, the material found on the compilations Hatful Of Hollow and Louder Than Bombs is equally essential to that found on the albums. many will claim that Hatful Of Hollow is superior to The Smiths- idisagree, but iwont get into that juste yet.

as far Morrissey, again iwould suggest to start at the beginning with Viva Hate, though, again, it shouldnt matter so long as you dont start off with Maladjusted, his weakest album by far, and get the wrong idea [and even then, theres enough on Maladjusted to intrigue and excite any eventual Moz lover]. ipersonally began getting substantively into Morrissey's solo catalogue after gaining an initial familiarity with that of The Smiths. idid so by downloading his singles and other tracks included on his best of compilations or that otherwise seemed intriguing.

if iwere to personally rank Morrissey albums itd go like this [where theres room for switching in each section and the albums are simply listed in chronological order within sections]:

Vauxhall And I

The Queen Is Dead
Strangeways, Here We Come
Your Arsenal

The Smiths
Meat Is Murder
Viva Hate
You Are The Quarry

Kill Uncle
Southpaw Grammar

Maladjusted

Viva Hate. its also included on Bona Drag, which is a compilation of tracks from his first seven singles, and the "best of" compilations.

ifind this opinion to be completely ridiculous. anyone who would say The Smiths are good shouldnt be able to say that Morrissey is "really bad" without huge contradiction. ican see prefering the Marr penned Smiths material, but to slam Moz's catalogue, one that is so closely related to his former band's, seems to imply that you never really got The Smiths at all. its not like comparing Phil Collins and Genesis or Sting and The Police- Morrissey's solo career builds very much directly off of The Smiths.

this is also a good suggestion for a starting point- not his strongest album, but his current album and it is near to the excellence of Vauahall And I and Your Arsenal.
