What about Jazz and blues?

Rap is a sub-set of the hip hop genre.
Rock IS a genre.

You're asking us to compare a steak-knife to a broadsword.

Obviously Rock, but it was a very unfair match to begin with...
especially with rock being the predominant thread on this forum

Unfortunately that only leaves you with about two pennies worth of music to like, I'm afraid.

I think it's very wrong to compare two completely dis-similar genres, especially when one of the two being compared is the most popular musical form EVER. Of course Rock would win in a poll, but the fact is that they are completely different musical idioms. Rock and Rap have as much to offer as any other particular genre, in their own unique ways, and there are just as many musicians of both styles who are dedicated, passionate, and uniquely creative within their fields, just as there are plenty of absolutely horrible Rap musicians and equally horrible Rock musicians. So, I repeat that this is a rediculous thread, I enjoy both equally.

A better thread would have been, perhaps, "which do you prefer, Rock music with rapped vocals, or Rap music with elements of guitar rock?" And yes, there is a distinction there. Personally, I'd go for the Rap with rock elements, such as Run DMC and Cypress Hill, it just seems much more authentic than the sad attempts of many rock performers to appear authentically "hip hop"...just my 2-cents...

I don't think that's accurate really...I think of Hip-Hop as more of an electronic sub-style that's often used in conjuction with Rap, but you can have Rap stand on its own without Hip-Hop sounds, and likewise Hip-Hop can exist without Rap.

Also, why is there an option for "I hate both" but not "I love both"???

But really, most art of the past few centuries is fairly male-oriented, considering that about 85% of all of the most significant musicians have been male...I'm not saying that it's right, it's just history.

Even if he hated 90% of everything out there, there's more than enough within that 10% to keep you entertained for a lifetime.

I hate them both nowerdays, and if you hadve put Rap and Punk i definately wouldve put i hate them both. If music doesent have brass instruments nowerdays, im not interested. Think Jamaican music (but not DANCEHALL OR RAGGA) and Soul.

Androcentric, well ill say that bloody feminists have made it like a crime to be a man (full stop) and to make anything on that subject. Unless it degrades women (ala Rap, and Rock sometimes actually) then they have no grounds for complaint whatsoever.

And id put Hip Hop as a subgenre of Rap, chronologically it goes the other way i know, but the style today is dominated by the more poppy, colourful, mass-market-friendly Rap as opposed to the more grimey and socially-consciencious Hip Hop. Im no expert, but thats the way it comes out to me. Like 50 Cent over Public Enemy.
