well, perhaps, but the best album of 2004 in my mind is How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb- one of the most unashamedly "upbeat" albums of the year- so idont think you could use the "Joy Division fan who likes the gothic, depressing sounds more" excuse here. Turn On The Bright Lights is simply a better album in nearly every respect- nearly impossible for them to follow up and out do ithink. maybe next time.

Your opinion........
As to U2's album, good, but the best album of the year? Wouldn't make my top 30.

To be honest, HTDAAB is just a good U2 album. U2 is a shell of their formal selves (I know Chris is going to flame me on that). Case in point, check out the majority of music critic's top ten, very few have the U2 album (less the rolling stones mags and all, who don't really have credibilty anymore.
Check this list of major music critic's top 10 here.
Notice how U2, a major world band, is only on 6 of the 37 lists. And Interpol, who get very little airplay in comparrison (and almost nobody over 30 knows who they are) got on 5. Heck, U2 didn't even make metacritics top 30! Metacritic bases there picks on the music magazines reviews! I know, Interpol didn't make the 30 either, so in my face too.
Not to pick on Chris or the other U2's fans out there, it's just there was way more creative and more interesting release this year than HTDAAB.

idont want to turn this into another thread of me explaining why How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb is the best album of the year. imerely brought up U2's latest album to show how the theroy that people here overwhelmingly prefer Turn On Your Bright Lights to Antics only because their bias preferences lie with more depressing, Joy Divisionish music is simply incorrect, at least with me. iwould hav no hesitation in saying that the more upbeat Antics is a better album than Turn On Your Bright Lights if that were the case- but its not. How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb is far more upbeat than either record and iprefer it much more than either Interpol album. upbeatness is not the problem. the problems are the weaker lyrics, the much less enagaing music, the unfitting stripped down production and the overall unwhelming performances [not to mention the short length and recycling of an old b-side that was better the first time]. Antics is not as good of an album as ...Bright Lights because ...Bright Lights is a far greater album than Antics.
