TEGAN AND SARA – SO JEALOUS
[VAPOR/SANTUARY]


Tegan and Sara’s new album, the follow-up to 2002 Shortlist Music Prize nominee If It Was You, is aptly named- after you hear So Jealous that’s exactly how you’ll feel.

Only 24 years old, this is Tegan and Sara’s third major release with Vapor/Sanctuary Records. Where the last album was a return to a more raw, punk sound, So Jealous is a perfect piece of pop that still maintains that edge. The first single, ‘Walking With A Ghost’, is a haunting track about escaping the haunts of past relationships. The title track is equally ominous with its paranoid atmosphere and lyrics.

Again, this record is about irresistibly catchy guitar tunes [fleshed out beautifully with more keyboards and other electronic effects than past albums] and the girls’ wonderfully unique and harmonized vocals. No one right now is writing better 2-4 minute pop tunes than these twins from Calgary and the proof is all through this album. From upbeat gems like ‘Take Me Anywhere’, ‘Speak Slow’ and many more, to slower, effectual tracks like closer ‘I Can’t Take It’, it’s all here. Still so young, Tegan and Sara are compiling a catalogue that is truly special.

"Walking with a Ghost" is almost too catchy...

I got this album, and I love it. So catchy, it reminds me of a female pop Interpol. Definetely one of the better releases of 2004.

The vocals sound like made by kids who make me want to simply hit them in the face for just being there. Of course I'm a wimp so I don't actually do the hitting. But irrespective, I really dislike Tegan and Sara much like I dislike that pop-punk girl.

I would attribute it to misplaced aggresion...

I wish I had seen them live, but I went to mexico and had to pay a small fortune in bribing police officers...

This album is horrible. DO NOT BUY IT!

I wouldn't pay for anything from the pop factory anyway, even something that pretends to have integrity such as Tegan and Sara. Still, I have heard this and it is not too bad. Guilty, perhaps, of being "too" catchy, music like this tends to be pretty forgettable. That's not meant to be a knock on Tegan and Sara, but it's the truth. This is pop music, after all. But they mean well, at any rate, which is more than you can say about most the bands that had songs mingling with the beginner-level "Walking With A Ghost" last year.

Of course, this is why I don't listen to the radio.
