as far as i know shepherd only wrote the words and music to half along with a few other of my favorite SG tunes (then again i haven't seen my SG liner notes in years). if that is indeed his voice on 'half' it's extremely processed because it doesn't sound anything like the voice screaming obscenities at the fans in the live mp3s i've heard (spoonman became a much more agressive tune on stage). if anything the vocals on 'half' sound a lot like what cornell sounded like on '665' and '667' from ultramegaOK

I says that Ben did it in the liner notes, which I've looked at many times trying to remember what he's saying.

When I saw them in '94, they did "Half" as an instrumental and transposed it a half-step (which brings it in line with the rest of that album anyway). I had been looking foward to hearing Sheppard, um, "sing" that song...

Too bad, Shepherd (I got tired of nobody knowing how to spell it, so I checked) looks so dead in all the videos and I like it whenever a band gives the vocals over to someone else, like when James Iha sings instead of Billy Corgan or when Izzy Stradlin sings instead of Axl Rose (which is somewhat a relief).

It's actually a nice touch, especially live, when a main vocalist hands over the mic for a song or two. It tends to personalize the other band members a bit more. The music is always most important of course, but a show is also about interaction.
I saw Mr Bungle twice, and the first time only Mike Patton talked to the crowd, and that was very minor at that. The second time, not only was Patton more personable, but other members chmed in between songs with an occasional comment or wisecrack. There were some backing vocals as well the second time. Both shows were excellent musically, and I remember them fondly among my top concerts. But I thought the second show was far, far better because of the vibe.

In the band that I'm in now (we call it a side-project for some reason), we are talking about being a "switcher" band which would definitely take the fore-discussed idea to the extreme, but I think I'm still the most charismatic one....which brings up the point the a band's frontman is their frontman for a reason. It just seems somewhat two dimensional for bands such as Metallica to use essentially no back-up vocals, like those other guys in the band are just robots with household names.

Tonight, I was reawakened to the fact that this album has a deep, spiritual significance for myself. It would take way too long to explain and would just prove embarassing for myself, but it none the less was an edifying experience listening to it tonight. All the stranger that last Sunday I ordered a promotional poster Superunknown it off of eBay, only I put it up on my wall the night before my epiphany. This album marked the end of a period of my life and the start of another; tonight was my complete liberation from that chapter. Don't try to understand, cause I ain't gonna explain....I just felt I should say this in this thread - since it directly concerns this album. Laying on my bed in view of my (somewhat wrinkled) poster, I absorbed all seventy minutes of the Superunkown while wearing my trusty flannel shirt (to extend the tribute even further), with plenty of chills to boot, .

I just had an interesting listen to Louder Than Love. It's been a while actually. I realized just how much better I liked it than Superunknown. If only they could have captured the energy of these earlier albums as they matured, that would have been something. I had Superunknown coming up after this, but I cancelled that and am moving on to something else...
