Flemish folk

Someone asked me in the Scandinavian folk thread what was good about Flemish folk, so I decided to devote a new thread to it...

I fear that Flemish folk is hard to get abroad, but for instance Troissoeur is really good... Their first album was mostly acoustic, with rather raw vocals and and invented language, sounded a bit like medieval Italian monks living in the mountains (or that`s what I have in mind when listening to them)... Their new album was produced by one of the guys from Front 242 and is way less folk... more electronic, more prog maybe too and sometimes even English lyrics... I guess it`s good that they developped their style, but I fear that I`ll always prefer the first one...Btw the group consists of four guys, instead of what their bandname suggests )

Lais is another one I like, the band that got me into folk actually... it`s three young ladies, who have angelic voices if we may believe Emylou Harris... they started from a traditional basis, moving bits and bits closer to rock, country and pop with every record... though don`t start thinking of the Corrs now, cause compared to them is folk of the most traditional kind... I kind of moved on though, but I find them still enjoyable...

Kadril is more or less the founder of what is Flemish folkrock, basing themselves on Fairport Convention, French folk and their Flemish roots of course... They have had different singers, but I prefer their latest one...

(Bub) is also enjoyable, mainly instrumental, focused around flutes, sax and bagpipes, Aedo is similar and I know the accordeon player, he used to be in my class...

Ambrozijn is one I like as well... a bit like Kadril, but maybe a bit modern, different at least... Fluxus has quite a name as well, but I haven`t gotten into them as of yet..

Jaune Toujours is a rather unique band from Brussels, mixing jazz, folk and chanson... singing in French and Dutch about the advantages and disadvantages of living in the big city... about the problems of migrants...

It`s French for song, meaning the French tradition of singer songwriters like Renaud, Edith Piaf, Jacques Brel (who was from Belgium, but lived mostly in France)

Very medievil at times. I like what I heard on Douce Victime the best do you have it?

I may buy it if the rest of they songs are as good as the samples.

What's that reed instrument I hear on many of these bands, Bombarde?

Troissoeur wasn't for me, but only heard their newest.

Lais, of course I really liked.

Kadril, wasn't my taste.

Ambrozijn, and Fluxus were mixed, some good some bad.

Ambrozijn had some amazing production, a little to hot in the vocals, but the guitar tone was fantastic on this song.

DE HERTOG van BRUNSWYK was one of the funniest album covers I've seen since the Butthole surfers.

The samples available on the artists I like I feel aren't always their best songs, so you may have more insight than me.

Regarding Troissoeur I`d advise to pick Trah Njim (Mijn Hart = My Heart but than in reverse...)

I actually have only the two first Lais albums (Lais and Dorothea), especially is the first is more traditional, with the guys from Kadril accompanying...

I`ll look at the samples (sorry for not giving the links btw), but this internet connection is rather slow, so I won`t do it now...

Jaune Toujours, I'm very interested in as well, but couldn't find any samples.
