Cake Pressure Chief

Many know this band from their singles "Short SAkirt Long Jacket" and going the distance, but there is so much more to this band from Sacremnto California. On their Fifth album the band utilizes the actual singing ability of the usually deadpanned vocalist on the track "Guitar Man". Lyrics on this album are pretty solid but sometimes feel put together for rythmes. The main downfall of this album is Cake seems to be using the same formula as they've used on previous albums.

Score: 7.5/10
Best Tracks: Carbon Monoxide, No Phone, The Guitar Man

Something New
I was actually slightly disappointed in this album. I found the songs got old very quickly, especially No Phone and Wheels, mostly due to a lack of unimaginative chorus writing. Not to mention the disturbing broken feeling I get from Too Much Carbon Monoxide, it's failing beatnik (where once John McCrea seemed a master) leads to the under-crafted, too dissonant breakdown, "I wish I wasn't just a pedestrian." The album does have it's few graceful moments, however, with Take It All Away's well-placed lyrics making for a powerful break-up song, Waiting's melancholy dreamworks to trounce even the happiest of moments, Palm Of Your Hand's semi-melodic organ driven backgrounds, and End Of The Movie's quiet solitude. It becomes readily apparent that John McCrea's cutting edge for this album is his singing ability, which really shines through, to the consternation of many anti-Cake listeners, near the end of the mostly disturbed Wheels.
Another disturbing thing coming through my speakers on this album was the very obvious lack of trumpets in most songs. Where is it? I hear it in scant moments, but it seems like their trumpet player has become the newest addition to the band: The keyboardist.
Not one of Cake's best albums. It's Prolonging the Magic simplicity and heartbreak and Motorcade of Generosity backbeat and backbone won't save it from the inevitable disintegration. There is, however, no doubt on first listen that it's Cake.
