Richard Devine's melodies
I was listening to Devine's Ascet Desect and man the guy comes up some melodies of his own.
I like them but they are a bit cheesy -just like those beautiful gangsta rap melodies-
It's weird but I guess american cheesyness has also arrived to the world of IDM.

LOL. i love this description. i'd have to say that Devine is looking for some kind of new language of tones but has kind of failed to do so. i believe that a lot of his better tones are from timbral effects. this is especially present on Lipswitch.

i think he spends 70 % of the time programming that massive complex drummage and FX's and 30 % composing those dr dre'ish melodies.
devine's melodies reminds me a lot of those great melodies by BONE THUGS AND HARMONY.

but that's the focus of his music. let's face it, Devine is about immersion in effects.

that is the focus of plenty of american IDM. cheesyness, spectacularity, paraphernalia and little class.
not talking about r rine, loscil and others that i highly admire.

do you think this of some similar artists such as Felipe or o9? i find that they have found a pretty good medium in between noise and tones.

I am getting some o9, I have heard pretty descent comments about them. Felipe did ot interested me much but now that you mention him, I'll give it a listen.
I LIKE DEVINE i just find his music cheesy and short of class, but I like it.

yes i understand your viewpoint. i just wondered about the melodic values. i find that Felipe's Flim Toby captures some really core hip hop melodies within his exotic and organic landscapes.
o9 is a different story though. sadly, as Josh has noted to me, he is no longer putting out any more albums. but thankfully we have Church of the Ghetto P.C. i'd say his melodies were very exciting and diverse. of course we cannot overlook his structures that tend to mimick the "Swimmer" approach to music in that we never really go back to where we began. anyhow, i think that Six Records has a guy on there, forgot his alias, that really kind of brings that element back into play. it's all very exciting!

well o9 has about 4-5 other releases on various small labels that are almost impossible to find other than on a file sharing network. I do know he has a 7" on planet-mu though.
