Music sucks. So much of it.

Alot of different music comes across my desk. I've seen it all, heard it all, read all the spitshat PR boner press releases you could imagine. My conclusion: Music sucks. There is good music, dont get me wrong. But the majority of music that is presented to you under the assumption of them being 'something totally new' or 'original, inspired' etc... are the worst. So are people who try to market themselves online. Their music, I find, to be of a quality so sub-par that even Vanilla Ice's label would be fearful of signing them.

Why does so much music suck, is the question of this thread? I find three distinct possibilites:

1) Artists with no talent sell image heavy posturing
2) Artists with talent sell good music to fans who prefer the likes of category one
3) Profit margins are more important than taking risks. Record labels are PUSSIES! Plain and simple, its a fact. They are so piss scared of having a sliver of their enormous profit margin get reduced. They are vile people.

What do you think?

I think that there is plenty of amazing music being put out at present, as there has been at all other times in the history of recorded music. In fact, there's so much independent music, and so much exposure granted via internet technology, that I would say there has never been a better time for music, ever.

I think the problem lies more with the listeners, in this case.

I will say that the vast majority of music coming out of mainstream corporate markets is still garbage. But that's a given.

As for your comments about record labels, try saying shit like that to the thousands of struggling indie labels putting out the most creative music possible, with very little profit in return...there's literally more good music in print, right now, than you or I could ever possibly hope to listen to in a lifetime...

Although when you say record labels, i think its almost a given you mean the biggies not the Independants, who cant really put a foot wrong because they are independant. Shouldnt this thread be in the music industry forum anyway?

I believe there are several threads about today's music industry.

There are several reasons and they all get mentioned in those threads, but I leave you with this

Wrong. Its a widely held myth that independent record labels have superior quality, but that is really untrue. In my experience, indie labels (especially DIY) are usually the ones most likely to uninspired, bullshit, copycat music. 'Like Janis Joplin's soul - on acid - while playing with the JB's.' -- wretch. 'Imagine the talking heads meets cinematic orchestra - on peyote - while roadtripping through baja!' - feck. Or then you have the classic: 'while so many artists are out there making the same music over and over, ours isnt'. Or even: ' x artist has intengrity, others dont. x artist has been struggling for so long despite setbacks.' -- well maybe x artist should stop trying to be such a fucking rockstar for a while. Personally, I loathe these cliche-filled, bombastic press releases about artists who have done nothing except decide that they were one 3 years ago.

Truly, independent labels are harbingers of so much shit. Sure, some are good and have integrity but thats the exception not the rule. Especially so with independent labels because they have this funny way of thinking that if you put 'friend' + 'semi-talented musician' together, somebody will actully give a fuck about the group aside from their immediate circle of friends.

welcome to capitalism.

you sound pretty much exactly like i did once i got screwed over by the corporate machine for the last time a few years ago. only i bitched about software development instead of music. same shit different straw, without adding any suggestion on how to improve things you end up coming off like a REALLY whiny bitch

You are being spoonfed, then complaining about it? Take the spoon out of your mouth. Say no. Your life will be a lot better if you find good music and listen to it then if you actually read new press releases from the major labels...that sounds like a ridiculous waste of time...are they paying you to do that?

Yes, they do pay me. But I'm not being spoonfed. I cringe even when I read press releases from artists that I like. Dont remember arguing that there wasnt any good music, just that new artists are fucking flapdoodle worthless and never live up to their hype.

Ouch. I remember always wanting to have a job in and around music, but given the current climate, I really don't think I'd want to be in your field. Having to listen to and read about stuff you already know sucks - even if being paid - seems like it would be kind of depressing.

It gets to the point where asking about what a person thought about so and so's latest release is a pointless question: the fucking flock wouldnt dare say that they didnt like it. Same goes for the movie industry too. I was 'lucky' enough to be treated to an advanced screening of the biggest piece of shit move ever (aka. Phonebooth), and at the end when I mentioned how much it sucked the studio reps looked at me as if I had just desecrated a corpse. You dont need brains in this industry; just pucker up and get real good at kissing ass.
