The song is actually about losing ones childhood innocence. The song is based on a poem by Leonard Lipton. Who based his poem on a rhyme called, Really-O Truly-O Dragon.

Lipton went to college with Peter Yarrow. Yarrow found the poem that Lipton typed out on Yarrow's typerwriter and forgot about. Yarrow proceeded to add a few lyrics and write a melody for it. Years later the song became a hit, which Lipton gets half the money to this day from all the royalties.

But what you most likely are bringing up is the false urban legend that it was about marijuana.

The above bit of information is the type of things you learn when you have kids that ask a lot of questions.

This thread is cracking me up. Strangely enough, the other day I was thinking about all the different songs I knew about mermaids (I think I counted about 10) and I was considering burning a cd full of them for kicks.

Unfortunately I can't think of any songs about dragons right now. But I do think we should have more threads like this devoted to songs with odd topics.

I think that's a great idea! Unfortunately I don't know any dragon songs... but I did find a Dungeons and Dragons cd called "Songs of the Dragon": http://www.midiotmusic.com/wsnF3AA1.html

Maybe you could try to download some of the songs from there or something, to see what their songs are like? They could be total crap... but you never know.
