Does Irish music count as classical?

The old stuff, not the modern music, like "Cry of the Celts" or similar. Don't get me wrong- I love it, it's probably my favorite type of music, but there's simply no way to classify that as Classic. I'm talking more the old ballads and famous scores.

What do you think?

It's folk music.

Folk music can be "elevated" to "classical music"...like Bartok and his collecting of East European folk music, which influenced his compositions. The academic study of folk music is referred to as ethnomusicology.

I guess "classical music" is just a catch-all phrase anyway. It usually doesn't apply to folk music, though.
