I'm saying this all hypothetically...
Is pop music a genre or just a term of 'popular music'...
I think these days it's becoming more of a genre- cos all music is popular really...
Pop is I suppose both a genre and a term used to describe popular music, which I define as that which appeals broadly to the masses. It is not an extreme or obscure form of music, but something which aims at more of a universal and 'popular' appeal. I suppose the term is being used more generally certainly nowadays, but then again it is a distinct genre from rock, jazz, rhythm and blues and funk. Having said that it can also be part of all of these genres as the side aiming at the masses more specifically as a crossover type of music into the mainstream. It is in some ways quite complex to define.

Pop to me has always meant popular music - the barometer for what the lowest common denominator will buy. I never really considered it a genre, although many times I have also used the term to refer to the bubble gum coming out at any given time.
But if you think about it, there really is not a whole lot of difference between Linkin Park, Destiny's Child and Christina Aguilera, and if anyone actually thinks they are really worlds apart, that person needs to listen to more music. A LOT more music.
