When I first heard Autechre I hated it. I wasn't ready for it because i hadn't prepared myself at all. Later on I got to love it, so I'd say Autpt's statement is utterly incorrect.

If someone had given me the advice of "Listen to Autechre and if you don't like it then electronic music isn't for you" and I'd took it, I wouldn't be listening to it now..

Some classics...

Kraftwerk - Autobahn
Boards of Canada - Music Has the right to children
Skinny Puppy - Last Rights
Leftfield - Leftism
Autechre - Tri-repartae

If you want to do a "trial" of what light IDM sounds like you can do a lot worse than go over to http://www.enpeg.com and buy the download of the Headphone Science EP for the mighty sum of $2.00

i can hear you, but i still think what they've done is a rough outline of what electronic music is. i don't think i meant that statement the way i wrote it. but i guess it's just from my own experience. the first electronic album i ever heard was Confield, and i think i give it too much credit.

perhaps im just too much of an Ae drone...sorry guys. and i am not being sarcastic, im sorry if that was offensive because i can totally understand. music is a dear and close friend of all of our's...

*Shudder* The day this statement is true is the day that I stop listening to anything that is generated by a chip! If your world is confined by Warp and its copycats this might be close...

Autechre doesn't remotely resemble most electronic music.

autpt, take from me matey, don't even go there

Funki will tell you that the 'roots' of electronica are in Chicago and Derrick May, Juan Atkins and blah...blah...blah......

He is however correct in his assertion. But since those wonderyears things have moved on. Electronica is more than a global phenomenon, it's a bedroom phenomenon. Derrick May & co. were the only people in the 80's doing that shit,.....now I do it in my bedroom (though not quite as well).

I do believe that Autechre have to be "built -up to". Don't just dive right in there. I remember one day it all clicking and I understood why IDM is so much more unique than many of its dance contemporaries. It gives an extra level of satisfaction which some more conventional music unfortunately lacks

Derrick May. Word the fuck up. See? Someone in here knows. If you wanna talk roots you have to give a perennial nod to PNG as well.

See, here's where you're wrong. It partly started in the late 70s with Chicago House - people trying to extend the life of Disco. That moved to Detroit and was twisted into Techno. It also partly started in NYC when DJs started using drum machines and synths for hip-hop. These weren't isolated... House, Techno and Hip-Hop quickly spread all over NYC, Chicago, Detroit, Philly, Boston, Miami, Atlanta, DC, Baltimore, Toronto etc... all in the early 80s.
