Aural hallucinations....

For a while now i've been listening to the awesome works of Richard Devine (Schematic records). I think his work is a world apart from his superb contemporaries.

Does anybody know what I mean when I say that I listen to some IDM and I can feel it have an effect on me physically...this is especially true for Devine. He deliberately throws so many sounds out at you at the same time that your brain has trouble processing it all. It all works similarly to an optical illusion of any sort, where your brain 'creates' something that isn't there. This effect is very much heightened with the aid of even the mildest psychoactive chemicals.

Devine's programming is inspired by and continually pays homage to Autechre (who else?) yet i feel his sound production is way ahead of anyone else. Check out his remix of 'come to daddy' for starters, then move onto 'Asect Dsect' for the main course and then 'Lipswitch" or 'Aleamapper' as a choice for desert.....sublime

we all know about the Devine one, me especially. His new work "Sort & Lave" should be a good one. I absolutely adore his production skills, yet some think it's a bit too much. He's influenced many people on schematic, but I wouldn't say he's paying homage to Autechre. I don't even think of Autechre when I listen to his music. I'd recommend the Richard Coleman Devine EP, or maybe even for starters, perhaps his very first release "Polymorphic ep".

So you recommend Richard Devine? I'll check him out.

Devine's inspiration from Autechre comes from the unconventional use of time signature in his music.

Autechre are the true pioneers of such a technique. Without them Devine and other schematic artists (Phoenecia etc) would be making straight hip hop. It's certainly music that has to be LISTENED to which is why it bores the hell out of my girlfriend...

Hmm when I listen to some IDM like Autechre or Richard Devine my hearing gets so focused that if I hear anything in the background or if anyone comes into the room I get totally freaked out, nearly get a heart attack :P
Anyways, listening to this music really closesly can be really fun, you get into a state where you hear everything very differently from normal hearing. It's alienating to say the least, and can be hypnotizing as well, it's like a drug for the ears.

such a good statement. Autechre are also one of the only artists (to me) that has made truly concentrated masterpieces. as Josh noted in one of his posts about how many artists in the past had the skill and knowledge of their musicality and software, i can compare to Autechre. they developed a thought out plan of how their music was going to move and evolve. there is more to their art than the surface of course. you can truly experience what they are saying in their music and how different aspects of their music is affecting the other's.

going back to Devine, i believe he was quite influenced by Autechre in that he puts quite a precedent on rhythms. and i'd also say he develops his pieces similarly, but not quite as clearly. Autechre exlains their points clearly. they explain clearly. very clearly.

you'd have to compare them to Bach.

I don't think so.

Bach and baroque music in general bores me quite severely. At the time it was groundbreaking, but now it's just an excercise in scales and moving a melody forward or backwards in the scale.

Dull dull dull.

In the way that mathematics forms a part of the music, yes but otherwise no, there really isn't any relation.

AUTECHRE puts you in place where time and shapes expands and contracts in an harmonic fashion.

AUTECHRE stretches time and sound at will, and that leaves me totally atonished and deighted.

Bach stretches the limits on voicing and tonal complexity leaving me totally astonished and delighted.

(my opinion of course!) hehehe
