i remember reading an interview with billy gibbons where he talked about playing some shows REALLY early in his career and this one time after a show he walked into his hotel room to find none other than jimi hendrix painting with a sponge taped to his stratocaster...
i didn't know about the chong deal though...

the concerts of The Jesus and Mary Chain in the 80's lasted only 30 mins. they were loud and short. so the audience would get very pissed off and start a riot.
Maybe not too obscure -
Black Sabbath's first name was Earth, which was stolen by a drone stoner doom band in the early 90's. Kurt Cobain was in that band as well if I am not mistaken, I tihnk Kurt at least did one album with earth. I am probably wrong though.

Not too obscure facts:
Jimi Hendrix could flip a right hand strung guitar upside down and play it left handed like it was nothing.
Jimmy Page owns Allister Crowleys old house on Loch Ness (the same Mr. Crowley Ozzy sang about who was a huge satanist)
Trent Reznor recorded the album "BROKEN" in the Sharon Tate home in LA where Charles Mansons crew murdered her and her friends.
Dennis Wilson of the Beach Boys used to hang out with Charles Manson before the murders and the Beach Boys recorded one of Manson's songs which he was not too happy about.
Ian Curtis from Joy Division used to have seisures on stage that people used to think were just part of the act.
Thats all I could think of, even though some of them are probably pretty well known...

< totally off topic >Allister Crowley was one seriously messed dude. He went from Pagan to practically satanic (not really satanic b/c pagan's aren't really supposed to believe in "satan") but yea. He did bad bad things. < / totally off topic >
as for musically obscure... well i can't think of any right now. my head is too full of Allister Crowley
