it's more like he couldn't handle the interband tension and the pressure from the new fame and quit mid tour after recording blood sugar sex magik (fall of 91)... he didn't rejoin the band again until 98 if i remember right... and he did a lot more than just shoot up while he was in that house (although he DID shoot up a lot) he recorded 3 albums during his time away from the peppers but it's pretty aparent that he was REALLY messed up when he recorded that first one on his 4 track 'niandra ladies and usually just a t-shirt' which is actually 2 seperate albums that get sold together on the same disc

as for more odd chili pepper facts... the band feared anthony keidis's fate more than anyone else's early on due to his drug abuse but it was hillel slovak who ended up dying from an overdose in 88...

frusciante ended up joining the band after inviting flea (and keidis?) to lend him moral support while he auditionned for another group (he didn't think he was good enough to be in their band)... suffice to say the audition didn't go as he thought it would and he ended up in the peppers
