I really like the first three SANTANA albums... (esp. the one with "Jungle Strut"...is that on the third one?)

But the notion that he is underrated is kinda laughable. Dude, he's all over the classic rock stations and the contemporary pop stations at the same time. Next time you're at the dentist or doctor, listen closely and you'll hear the latest SANTANA single over the sound of the drill or x-ray machine. The dude gets attention.

Now, MOBY GRAPE, that's a fuckin' great band!!

I voted out of habit: Airplane. I guess because they seem to have sort of faded stature-wise these last few fortnights.

I think their output is a little spotty but they had a HELL of a sound.
I think Jorma Kaukonen did that great SF sustainy guitar thing pretty dog goned well.
when the tunes are really good and the producer really catches a MOOD that suits the tune they were quite a band.

While I do like the Dead, they wouldn't even make my top four of that scene...

Amazingly, most younger (under 40) Dead fans have never even heard the music of some other bands of that era... If they did, they probably would realize that the Grateful Dead may not have been as good as they thought (or that these other bands were truly fine)...

If you like the Dead a lot, you should check out the other bands mentioned so far in the thread... Especially Quicksilver (I really love them)...
