Steve Reich
What do you guys think of him? I went to to talk to my music teacher yesterday, and he was playing some GREAT music. I asked him what it was and he said it was Steve reich. I only listened to like 30 seconds of his music (Because it was in between classes), but I liked it alot. What would you guys reccommend by him?

well, if Steve Reich was the RAMONES then I think "Music for (however many) Percussionists" would be "Rocket to Russia"
I think he's amazing.
My personal favorite is probably "Tehillim" mainly because I think he intends a spiritual component and I think he suck-seeds.

that would be "music for 18 musicians"
check this thread out as well: http://www.radiomute.com/musicthread8202.html
I started it a long time ago, yet was surprised when I didn't get much feedback.

I'll look for his music on soulseek until I see him again monday. Maybe he would be willing to let me borrow it, considering he has a great deal of my cds right now.

Steve Reich is one of the founding fathers of minimalism and he is totally superb!
Favorites: Tehillim, Desert Music, Music for 18 Musicians, Come Out, It's Gonna Rain

Variations is my favorite work of his..moves around from 6/4-5/4-4/4 and so on. i believe there are 3 flutes, 3 oboes, 3 Bb trumpets, 3 trombones, 1 tuba, 3 electric orgains (synths) and 2 pianos.
beautiful. it is what brought me to his work.

"it's gonna rain" : 2 phased-out tape players with repetitive message that blurs with time.
slightly out of topic, Bjork once said of Philipp Glass (another well known minimalist) that he was lazy, because he only got one idea that he developped. maybe we could say so with Steve Reich ? anyway, i think it is something to hear, but mainly to SEE ( i have a tape of a piece for 4 percussionists, i think it's Marimba ) - it's awesome !

I beg to differ with Bjork there. Glass has explored many avenues with his minimalism. He does have a very familiar sound, but that doesn't mean it's just one idea or all the same. One reason Glass might stick to the familiar...it sells! In the modern classical section of any record store good enough to have a modern classical section, Glass has one of the biggest sub-sections.
Reich similarly has some signature licks, but again his output has been quite diverse for the past 35 years.
Bjork also has a very familiar style but manages to cover a lot of ground. I would hope she'd be able to appreciate the capacity in other composers.

what she probably means is...
glass' signature "trick": the 123432 motion, and the synthesizer/flute/sax combo
steve reich's: marimbas, and phasing
still though, bjork is an idiot to call philip glass lazy. he's put out about 20 times as much music as she has
