They're actually my favorite current hip-hop artist, honestly...great stuff all around. Beyond the novelty of performing and recording with a full live band (( and being a very good live band at that )), they're also a very skilled producers, and are able to capture the sound and feel of sampled/electronic hip-hop through traditional means, which is pretty damn impressive...

Debunking Roots Myths 101

1) They sample. They play live but they also sample. Arguably their best work is studio work, when they sample.

2) They didnt start producing music when TFA came out. If you think they started there you are sadly mistaken.

3) Albums 1 - 3 are their best work, undoubtedly. There is really very little basis to argue differently on, if you are familiar with these works... especially the elusive Organix.

4) Guns Are Drawn isnt the best track of 2004.

The Roots WERE good in my opinion. Over the years they have lost it.

I'd recomend getting "The Roots Come Alive" if you want a taste of their former(read as better) sound. ...and pick up "illadelph halflife" and "things fall apart" while you're at it.
