I voted for The Queen Is dead, apart from Smiths 1 & 2 the only albums to which Morrissey contributed that I own... A shame, I know, but it's just one of the 9845215 bands I need to get more stuff from... Borrowed Morrissey's best of and Meat Is Murder some time ago and wasn't all that impressed, but the copy of the latest was damaged, so maybe that was not the best listening experience... I liked what I've heard from his latest record though... But the first thing I want now, is the first album The Smiths ...

IMHO any Smiths studio album comes way above any solo stuff, simply music of the music. If you are talking in terms of Morrissey's finest contribution, It's Vauxhall And I, no doubt. But the best album as a whole, it's Strangeways, no contest for me.

haven't heard the Morrisey stuff, but i sure love the "Singles" album. by far it has some of the better songwriting and lyrical beauty that ive heard for some time.

i really like William it's Really Nothing, The Boy with a Thorn in His Side and Ask.

get [or listen to] Suedehead, Morrissey's singles collection that was released in '97 ithink. its missing the singles from Maladajusted ['Alma Matters', 'Roy's Keen' and 'Satan Rejected My Soul'] and of course those from You Are The Quarry ['Irish Blood, English Heart', 'First Of The Gang To Die', 'Let Me Kiss You', 'I Have Forgiven Jesus' and 'I Like You'] but it is still an excellent compilation and ithink it stacks up very well to Singles.

To revive this. My favorite is The Queen is Dead. This was my first introduction to Morrissey and the gang, and I was hooked upon my first listen through. "Frankly Mr. Shankley" is one of my all time favorite songs.

Louder Than Bombs? On what basis?

On the whole it is an unsatisfying listen, despite some real gems. Ending with Golden Lights on the CD version does not help either, it's essentially a throwaway song. Compare it to the like of The Queen Is Dead, and even what could be called throwaway songs (as if any Smiths are) such as 'Some Girls...', Louder Than Bombs just does not stand up. On the studio albums, thought is put into the mood of the album, the tracklisting, etc., and it shows.

Louder Than Bombs would rank well below all the studio albums, and below Hatful Of Hollow, which of all the compilations feels most like a studio album due to the similar production values and lyrical themes.
