Being relatively new to extreme metal and realizing there must be lots of hybrid bands, are there any distinguishing characteristics between Black metal and Death metal?
The only thing that really seperates them are the lyrics, honestly...they're pretty much identical in sound. Death Metal, as the name implies, is obsessed with the macabre, the obscene, and the horrific, while black metal, not so much so...

Black metal lyrically is usually to do with something satanic. Death metal lyrically is usually stories of murder, death and generally horrible things. Musically bm is generally faster than dm- bands like anaal nathrak and dark funeral going at over 200bpm at times. The music, also- could simply be described as more... evil! and the vocals are also usuallly the trademark bm quorthon scream. With death metal there are some bands who go extremely fast (eg morbid angel- although they have black undertones) but most i would say are slower than bm bands. Cannibal corpse is a good example of the "classic" dm sound- murky, bass-heavy and generally anything which sounds unpleasing to the ear- and with the trademark dm growl. Oh, and you'll find a few bm bands use keyboards- which is practucally forbidden in dm (exept with nocturnus!) Uhhhh- many bm band member (especially scandinavian like to dress up in corpsepaint- this is rarely done in the field of dm. Hmm i could think of more but there you go for now

Plus it has alot to do with the idealogy behind the music. Death metal is more about having a good time, making some really intense music for the shock factor. Where as REAL black metal is serious, alot of time may be spent in the structure of songs. Also black metal is usually raw and primitive with screechy vocals and guitar, and drums that go a mile a minute with lots of tremolo picked riffs.
