I've been listening to this stuff since the early 80s and still don't totally understand this distinction. I've always just thought the lyrical and theatrical themes of the black metal bands lend themselves more to dark, satanic ideas, whereas death metal bands aren't limited to such ideas. Then there are a ton of exceptions to this....
I've always preferred death metal....more focus on tearin' your head off than converting your religion.
Some albums fall squarely in the middle. The s/t DEICIDE. That's fuckin' death metal baby. But about as evil and satanic as it gets.... I give up.
