Theres alot going on... You just have to know where to look. Radio and TV music generally sucks although I do enjoy a few radio/TV played bands such as Modest Mouse and Franz Ferdinand (though I was listening to them before they were played there). Usually I get alot of ideas from friends and the places (clubs) I hang out at. The best bar around here with the best music is Thursdays Lounge. I pick up alot of good music just going there!

The topic is about rock groups in the mid 90's, I'm saying Phish isn't rock. You're a little slow I see.

Where did you get the idea that musicians qualifying as "jam bands" aren't playing a form of rock music? The style itself developed directly from '60s psychedelica and '70s fusion/jazz rock...beyond that, Phish employ plenty of rock and pop conventions in their music; they may not be immediately familiar to fans of verse/chorus/verse pop-rock, but it's certainly rock music in many of their chord progressions, vocal stylings, and most of all, guitar playing and drumming...

...to put it simply, they're certainly not classical, they're not in any way avant-garde, the jazz community would never think of including them in a discussion of modern jazz or even fusion for that matter, they hardly qualify as blues-men, country boys, or folk stars, and they're about as electronic as kenny wayne shepard...thus, they are a rock band, and if you dissagree, your definition of rock must be horribly limited...

Man, thanks for reminding me! I completely forgot about that!

I retract my previous post and hold my head in shame...Phish are definitely not a rock band...

Jam bands are definitely a sub-genre of rock. Rock is a very wide category, and under that broad unbrella a heck of a lot has happened since the mid 90s. There's a lot of great rock happening, but you have to really dig for it.
