Surfin' - Beach Boys, confusion
Ok, all yer Beach Boys fans. I'm confused on the diff versions of the above song. The sleeve on the 2-fer CD album "Surfin Surfari/Surfin' USA" says that the song was re-recorded for the album. When was this re-recorded ? And what happened to the original version ? Now, I have another "version" appearing in the "Lost Tapes" CD, which incidentally sounds exactly the same ! can anyone tell me what/where is the original version ? Was there ever a Candix master tape or only in Capitol for this song ?

Gosh, I never knew there was more than one version of the song. I am more into their later work. "Surfin" is probably my all time least favorite Beach Boys track. It happens to be on the Good Vibrations box set, which I have.

The first version of "Surfin' Safari" was acapella...it is on the bonus disc in the boxed set, I believe. There's also an interesting out take where Mike Love threatens to bust Dennis in the mouth if he laughs again.

The Loves were very well off compared to the Wilsons, although their fortunes changed..but apparently Love's old man was even more of a brute than Murry Wilson. Brian once defended his cousin's abrasive personality by saying "look, Mike grew up in a house where he would be talking on the phone and his dad would scream 'Get off the f--king phone ya punk!"

Mine too ! But I can't rest until I know the recording history of those "different" versions ! That's what I call a fanatical completist !

Are you sure you are not talking about Surfin' Safari? Both Surfin' and Surfin' Safari were initially demos that were recorded in 1961. With the Surfin' demo being released in Dec. 1961. But I only know of their making a master in June of 1962 for Surfin' Safari at Capitol. With David Marks in place of Al Jardine on the master recording. No masters were made at Candix that I know of.

It's "Surfin" I'm talking about.
From the CD sleeve for the "Lost Tapes", the version on it is the Capitol version. In the Capitol 2-fer releases on CD, the sleeve says that it is a re-recorded version, but both sound the same to me. I just wonder, are these 2 the same, and if not, where is the original version ?

Keep in mind that labels have a history of screwing up releases of reissues. Especially in the liner notes and track info.
I am pretty sure (95%) there was only the demo for Surfin'. It had already been released as a single and a slight hit by the time they signed with Capitol. While Surfin' Safari was not released until the master was recorded at Capitol

There were masters from the Candix sessions.
I have a CD of those sessions and in the booklet it explains which ones were approved as master. I don't have the CD at this point in time but when i get it back ill check.
