Just curious, NewDawn, what criteria must a song meet to find itself on your greatests top 10 when it's not one of your personal top 10? That is to say, what separates your favorite and greatest songs? I ask because, to me, those two are one and the same. If I thought Stairway to Heaven was the greatest song ever, I would have put it in my list.
Sorry if it sounds like I'm putting down your favorites, I don't mean to. I honestly love most of the songs you listed, I just don't quite understand the difference between your two lists.

No offense taken, to me a personal favorite is affected by all types of factors that wouldn't equate when I consider something a great song. For example, I play alot of guitar, so I know I am biased in a sense in that direction. I know a guitar instrumental like Santana's 'Europa' is NOT one of the greatest songs, but is rather very specific to me and my love of the guitar. I try not to let that color my overall opinion of great rock songs in general. I won't place too many instrumental songs among my greatest list because I believe in the importance of vocals to a song.
There are certain songs I love because they have a certain nostalgia attached to them, which increases their personal value in my mind. Being a human being I have a tendency to forgive imperfections in my personal favorite songs that I can't forgive if I were to put it among the highest order of songs.
My personal favorites are more variable from week to week, so I may be on a Santana-binge one week and get tired of them the next. I could get tired of hearing Stairway to Heaven on the radio for the nth time, but no amount of overexposure is going to change the fact that I consider it one of the greatest songs. So I try to keep my subjective feelings more in check when it comes to my 'greatest' list.
A truly great song has a number of characteristics to me.
It has to have great structure, which includes chord selection, the placement of the vocals, guitars, drums, and bass within the song all show a superior sensitivity toward each other.
Chemistry, which is very instinctive, the song just 'feels right' and all parts fully complement one another. Good or great vocals are a must. Most of the truly great songs have a frontman who can deliver the goods.
Also, great songs give the listeners just enough space for them to make the song their own. They are almost obscure in that way, they let you create your own meaning for the song. Maybe it's the lyrics that open up the mind, or the music element, but it's something. For example, a song like Echoes by Pink Floyd leaves the listener to interpret it as they may.
Having personal 'ownership' leads into another necessary quality, longevity. The more you own the song the longer you are interested, the longer you stay with the song, the more you are able to apply your own world into the world that the music creates. These songs last the longest. Albums like Dark Side of the Moon, with it's theme of young adulthood misenchantment, will always have meaning to young people growing up. The themes apply to growing up and it's reality, and there will always be people growing up into the 'real world'. So a song with a strong theme definitely has an advantage over one that doesn't.
Anyhow, I am going on and on, but I hope you get the idea.

Honestly, I've never understood how these same songs always end up on these lists when no one actually considers them their personal favorites. It seems most people just kind of like them, but hold them in such high respect that they wouldn't dare argue the merits of less obvious songs over these. I just have this crazy notion that setting songs like these in stone as "The Greatest of All Time" sort of kills the experience of hearing new music.
Well, rant over.

Some of them are my personal favorites, but If I said my personal favorites were the greatest i'd be lying. Becuase theyd probably almost all be Zeppelin songs. I think those songs always end up on lists because they really deserve to be on there.
favorite songs probably
1. Since Ive Been Loving You
2. Babe i'm Gonna Leave You
3. Heartbreaker
4. Over the Hills and Far Away
5. The WASP (Texas Radio and the Big Beat)
6. Voodoo Chile
7. Dazed and COnfused
8. Let it Bleed
9. Communication Breakdown
10. Whole lotta Love
any order.

There are about 100 more that I could list... I'm sorry, I just can't narrow it down to ten... I have about 150 songs that I consider masterpieces of rock...
O.K., my top three would be:
