The Residents

I know quite of you know of this group. Wouldn't you say they are the most mysterious group of all time? And this alone, I think, would make them some sort of avant-gardist, but then again, I really don't know where to classify them. Please discuss.

I haven't touched it yet because I'm planning on writing a pretty lengthy essay.

I just need to find time to write the thing...

oh seba, got a question for you. I saw a DVD from the Residents last nite called Eskimo or something. it was only 13 bucks. I didnt' get it because it wasn't the same film that I wanted to get.

the one I wanted to get is the one you posted some pictures in the forum, what is the name of that? the one with all the really surreal stuff in it? is it called Icky Flix?

Yep, that's the one -- the specific piece is called "Vileness Fats", but it's contained in it's entirety on Icky Flicks...I can't tell you of the quality of the other pieces (although I'm sure they're brilliant) as I haven't gotten around to picking up the DVD myself (but soon...soon...), but you can order it and other Rez-merchendise here (http://ralphamerica.com/) or here (http://www.euroralph.de/)

well, seba, I purchased a used copy of Eskimo DVD this afternoon. I haven't watched it yet. I will come back and let you know what I think later.

here is the story: I bought a Getter Robo Armageddon DVD(japanese giant robot cartoon) yesterday from my favorite CD store and I liked it so much that I bought the whole Getter Robo DVD boxset on line. so I took that Getter Robo DVD back today and exchanged it with The Residents' Eskimo with a small fee.

I saw 3 videos out of 6 on Esikmo. they are weird, surreal and funny as hell. my wife and I couldn't stop laughing and make fun of the videos(it is a good thing, we did get a big kick out of them). and the songs are awesome. I can't believe they made those songs back in the 70's!

and they have an easter egg, where they have a really trip out video with some really funny eskimo facts, such as, they bath in urine.

the residents members probably told each other "fuc k that disco shit, let's make some creepy ass ambient eskimo music!"

after seeing the other 3, I will seal up the DVD and watch them again in the summer. it should be great to combat heat wave!

Glad you enjoyed it, Evil -- makes me realize that I need to hurry up and order up all of their DVDs.

...the music on Eskimo is some of my favorite Residents music (it's some of their most experimental)...and as you've found out, they were easily amoung the most revolutionary artists of the '70s and all time...

some of the songs like the one for Arctic Hysteria is just fuc king creepy and scary as hell. I am gonna record them on a CDR and listen to them on a stereo by themselves later.

you are right, I still can't believe they made them songs in the 70's. amazing! and their songs on Eskimo still sound fresh today! freaking 2004 we are talking about.

sometimes, their songs remind me a bit, just a bit like Cabaret Voltaire without the very hard edge. it is a good thing though.

I am definitely seeking out Icky Films on DVD soon!
