You might want to check out some Mouse on Mars and Plaid, they're pretty laid back and structured most of the time...and as for electronic music with some pop elements, try Sybarite.
I'd recommend more but I've only slept 2 hours and have a shitload of stuff to do...maybe more later.

Could you please take that back... then jump off a building and hurt yourself.

I have to hand it to you, halcyon...your presence here does wonderful things for my "forum image". I come across as a modest, personable, subtle diplomat of the musical arts whenever you're around!
In any case, with the above post I wasn't quite sure if you were specifically attacking Portishead or the notion of Trip-Hop in general...if it was the latter, I'll just quietly give my support to Massive Attack and Tricky and find my way out...

I do what I can, seba. Its for the best that way.
I was attacking 'trip-hop', but mostly the notion of trip-hop. Which, as I've posted a few times previously, was destructed by Nightmares On Wax when they released Science (1), and then Smokers Delight. You probably dont remember when Smokers Delight came out... might have been before your time, but they set a standard to it -- along with the first Shadow 12"s, and early Ninja Tunes stuff.
But what is trip hop? Its what the mainstream media adopted to sell the 'chill out' vibe to less well-educated music fans in the mid-nineties. I remember way way back in highschool, when I was heavy into the stuff, and some guy tried to foist Blue Lines on me talking about how its 'different' and 'good'... but fuck... I had already moved on by that time. The Massive Attack / Tricky / Portishead triumverate was a load of mainstream bullshit. And dont even get me started on Beth Gibbons, aka fatso deluxe.

It's not because you don't like Massive Attack/Tricky/Portishead, that they should be bad... and yes I do like Beth Gibbons her solo album as well...

I've mentioned Smoker's Delight on a couple occasions and do like Carboot soul alot as well...
would you classify DJ Krush's release on Nippon "Krush" and "Strictly Turntablized" on Mo'Wax back in 94' Trip Hop? or is that just instrumental hip hop?

That was instrumental hip-hop. It all was essentially instrumental hip-hop. But those two Krush disks were huge; both good. Especially the self-titled disk... he really had the good chunky, low sax phrasing, noir sound going on. You can see where he developed it on Meiso. And especially on the coldcut/food/krush ColdKrushCuts mix disk on NinjaTunes. THAT was what that shit was all about... those mixes were the hottest thing in '97.
