Question Buying vs. Burning

i was looking through my cd collection today and saw that around 30% of my cd's are burned ones. So im bringing up the age old debate, is there something wrong with burning cds?

I don't see anything wrong with burning, I burn to check out bands that I want to hear, see if I really like them or not.

But I also buy the albums... I say I buy because I want to support the artist, which is true... but I think deep down it's because I'm materialistic and a collector of sorts, and shiny new shrinkwrap is just sooo irresistable...

I don't really burn music unless it is absolutly needed. Maybe it is just me, which it probably is but when i burn music i feel this slight form of guilt. Wanting to be in the business in the future i do not think it is fair to the industry.

i'll sometimes burn a cd and later go and buy it, just for the sake of collecting and actualy owning the album.

I don't burn CD's. Basically this is how I see it. You're taking an artists work without their permission or payment. The arguement may be made that if the artist is rich or whatnot, it's ok to burn their stuff. But that's just like saying that it's ok to steal from the rich because their not going to miss it. It much like the whole Metalica/Napster issue back when. People seemed to get quite angry when Metalica expressed their concerns and acted upon them.

I think... if you respect the band enough... buy it... if you don't listen to them or like them that well... burn it. It's that simple.

& when they realised that their words against Napster wuld do more damage than good then they took their case back.....as they were supposed to be peoples band.It makes it prettyy clear that sharing & burning things wuld endlessly go on & we have to live with taht...

Point well taken. I'd say about 90% of my friends/aquaintinces burn CD's, but it really pisses my off when they have ONLY burnt CD's.
